The Ensemble

Discover The Science Fiction People

The group’s now recognizable name originally surfaced as more of a working title during a workshop that stirred up memories of famous on-screen robots. The workshop featured the Vocoder, which allows users to manipulate their voice to have robotic characteristics. Each ensemble member took turns experimenting with every vocal manipulation effect the Vocoder offered. The session soon shifted to everyone giving their best robot impersonation, which set the tone for the album’s narrative and signature sound.

Logo design for the Robot Revelations text as displayed on the album artwork. The album title reads, “Robot Revelations,” in futuristic and geometric sans-serif typeface. There is a slight glitch effect applied, with a slight rainbow outer glow.

The group chose the album’s title after their tracks came back from mastering. While listening over the entire album, the ensemble reflected on how each song roused different feelings, carried them off to fantastical places, and collectively laughed about Tony’s “robot” voice. “All the songs, they kind of twirl around you, like an orbit, or like in the movies,” Colleen remarked. The rest agreed. While on that thread, the group concluded that “Robot Revelations” reflected the entire album-making journey, their new appreciation for music, and the slow transition of Tony’s voice from a human to a robot throughout the album.

Meet the Members

CoLLeen Ashmore

“Focusing on music over the last year has been awesome. It makes me so happy, and makes me jump around and dance; even sing, too.”

Colleen dreamed of becoming a singer for a long time, and by the age of twelve, she was singing in her bedroom, in the shower, and all around the house. After getting her first organ as a child, Colleen would sit and play and encourage her family to sing along. Singing her songs, performing on stage, and creating her own music is a dream come true.

David Oppong

“For me, it’s nice to come together and learn about music. I love music. I want to make more beats and
practice my DJing.”

In the ensemble, David loves layering grooves and drum beats – anything that can get people moving! Over the last year of NaAC music sessions, David focused his music-making on hip-hop & rap production. Also known as DJ Vidojee, David started attending regular educational DJ meetups with Warm Leatherette, a local community-based DJ night. His efforts have paid off, and he’s currently getting more and more opportunities to showcase his DJ skills at events and dances!

Jan De La Cruz

Jan has a natural knack for creating great contemporary RnB, pop, and dance songs. As much as she would love to focus on her solo project, Jan’s contributions really shined on the album. After a NaAC music-creation session ended, Jan would often quietly remove her earbuds to reveal a very groovy song section or tasty loop.

Jan loves the fashion of pop music and loves to dance. In fact, she danced from a very young age and stopped after college. During this next year, Jan’s excited to learn more about writing and singing her own songs.

Mark is all about dance and techno music. Hailing from the UK, Mark is a big fan of music that combines electronic music with lyrics – like the Pet Shop Boys. When equipped with a drum machine, drum pads, or a pair of sticks, Mark locks into any groove like a metronome. He’s got an incredible sense of rhythm!

Mark’s looking forward to exploring dance and electronic music, incorporating cool sounds from synths and exploring sequencers.

Tony Goodison

“We’re one happy great big family, we all get along with each other and we all make music.”

If Tony’s in the NaAC studio, you’ll know it. Whether it’s joyous laughter, catchy kazoo tunes, or beat- boxed renditions of the goldie oldies, Tony’s boisterous personality is contagious and always brings happiness. Tony LOVES Radio! He’s a long-time volunteer at CJSW, Calgary’s local campus community radio station, and proudly reps his DIY CJSW garb all the time.

“Radio brings back so many memories. I love radio personalities. Back when I was in school, they’d come to our sock hops and dances. Those guys were rock stars to me. I get so excited about the voices they do, and the sound effects – that’s classic radio!”
